Hong Kong – 31 October 2006
NXP Semiconductors today announced that SIM Technology Group Limited (“SIM Technology Group”; SEHK stock code: 2000), a leading mobile handset and wireless communications module designer and developer in China, is using the Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 to provide Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) handsets around the world. These UMA handsets will allow consumers to make high quality, inexpensive calls by seamlessly switching between WLAN and mobile services. The efficient power management capabilities of the Nexperia 6120 solution enables consumers to enjoy over nine hours of talk time.
The rapid time-to-market advantages offered by the Nexperia System solution 6120 will enable SIM Technology to leverage the booming WLAN VoIP / GSM dual mode market. According to market research firm, In-Stat, over 132 million mobile terminals in the world will be equipped with both WiFi and cellular mobile communication functions within the next four years, enabling more users to benefit from UMA technology.
“NXP’s Nexperia System solution 6120 offers the right mix of form factor, range, functionality and power efficiency and is the obvious choice for our UMA mass market handset designs,” said Raymond Tsang, CEO, SIM Technology Group. “Given the rapid time-to-market benefits of the Nexperia solution, we expect our handsets to be available in October 2006, well in time for the mass roll-out and adoption of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) services.”
“SIM Technology Group’s UMA handsets will enable mobile consumers to enjoy good quality voice calls and seamless service at home and on the go, at affordable prices,” said Carsten Schimanke, International Marketing Manager for Cellular Systems, NXP Semiconductors. “The combination of our Nexperia System Solution 6120 and the leading architecture of SIM Technology will allow us to launch more handset solutions that are advanced, competitive and sophisticated.”
As well as utilizing the Nexperia System solution 6120 which uses the NXP BGW211, a low-power 802.11g WLAN system-in-package (SiP), the handset will be equipped with a two-inch TFT display and a 1.3 million pixel camera and supports MP3 and MP4. Its tri-band technology (900/1800/1900MHz or 850/180/1900MHz) will satisfy the increasing demand for WiFi/EDGE (GPRS/GSM) handsets in China, Europe and North America.
